Chapter Seven

LYLE

Lyle had never been so pleased to see the log cabin. Turning back to Gruff, Lyle held out his hands to his Daddy. His Daddy. He still couldn’t believe it. Gruff had claimed him in front of Harry as his. Okay, Gruff had claimed him from the first, according to his brother, but this time Lyle got to hear it.

He was so happy. Gruff beamed at him, putting his gloved hands in Lyle’s and letting Lyle tug him up the stoop.

They had things to do. Naked things. And Lyle couldn’t wait.

He tumbled into the entry, laughing at Gruff’s eagerness, or maybe laughing at his own. He wanted the quiet of their room and his Daddy buried inside him. He shivered at the thought of Gruff entering him, making Lyle his.

He had a home now and it was with Gruff.

“Hello, Lyle.”

Lyle turned and his world shattered into a million pieces, each one fracturing his heart.

The CEO of Kingdom Mountain stood in the doorway of the kitchen, smiling at him, his mouth curving as though he were delighted to see Lyle again, but one look into his ice-green eyes exposed the emptiness of his soul.

Lyle gasped and took a step back. Immediately Gruff wrapped his arms around Lyle, holding him tight and anchoring him to the present.

“What’s wrong?” Gruff asked, his warm breath ghosting over the shell of Lyle’s ear.

Hold me. Don’t ever let me go. Don’t believe the words that come out of his lying mouth.

“Aren’t you going to greet me, boy?” the CEO said.

“Who are you?” Gruff demanded as Lyle shrank back against him.

Damien appeared from the kitchen, his eyes bleak and mouth pinched. “This is David Rogerson, CEO of the Kingdom Mountain theme park. He’s here to collect his husband.”

“What?” Lyle stared at the CEO in horror. Now he saw a wicked gleam in Rogerson’s eyes. “He’s not my husband. I’m not married to him. I’m not!”

“I have a marriage license which says different.” The CEO held out a piece of paper. Gruff reached around him to take it before Lyle could move.

Gruff studied it and handed it to Lyle who stared at the piece of paper, a numb feeling spreading through him. It was a marriage license for David Stephen Rogerson and Lyle Anthony Parker.

He hadn’t even known his name was Parker, let alone that he had a middle name. Lyle closed his eyes, hoping against hope that when he opened them the CEO—he couldn’t think of calling the man by his name—and the piece of paper sealing his fate, would be gone. But this time, a miracle didn’t happen.

Lyle turned to Gruff and his heart froze at his Daddy’s anguished expression. “I didn’t know,” he whispered. “I don’t remember marrying him.”

“You pretended not to remember once before,” Gruff said sadly.

“I’m afraid my husband has always had a loose relationship with the truth,” Rogerson drawled.

“That’s not true,” Lyle gasped, wrapping his arms around himself. “That’s not true!”

“Come on, Lyle, time to go home.” Rogerson stepped forward as if he was going to yank Gruff out of his arms.
